The stuff of our lives.

We are surrounded by it, and if I wanted to have you wear something pretty, you could get it at the mall. But, I want you to be thinking about the meaning and the connections we have with all this stuff. Why do we hang on to something.

My favorite book in the world is "Pillars of the Earth:" by Ken Follet. I love his descriptions of the cathedrals and the mix of hatred and obsession his characters have. The copy I own I have had since I was in high school. I have read it so many times it is falling apart and held together with tape and rubber bands. I simply can not bring myself to replace that book, and I could easily. Oprah had it on her book list this year, but something about that worn out copy has a special place in my heart.

When I figure it out, I will most likely turn it in to a piece of sculpture, maybe a book "cathedral". But until then, it sits lovingly on my shelf.

What do you hang on to and why? Tell us that story through your metalsmithing project.
